A local Sunshine Coast resident and Transport and Main Roads employee has been recognised at a special service in Buderim for reaching 60 years of dedicated service in helping shape our State’s transport network.

Russell Van Tienhoven began his journey with the Department as a teenager in 1965. His first role was as a ‘nipper’ installing guardrails on what was then the Bruce Highway – now known as Nambour Connection Road.

In those early days, Russell also held the vital role of billy tea preparation, a tradition that speaks to the camaraderie and teamwork that has always defined our workforce.

From culvert construction to soil lab testing and major road projects, Russell’s career has been nothing short of extraordinary.

His work has left a lasting legacy across the region, from the transformative Burpengary Bypass in the 1970s to the four-laning of Steve Irwin Way and the reconstruction of the D’Aguilar Highway through Kilcoy.

But Russell’s story is not just about the roads he helped build – it’s about the people he worked with and the friendships he forged.

His colleagues describe him as “the ultimate gentleman” and “the big man with a big heart”, a mentor to many, offering warmth, reliability, and a sharp wit that made him a beloved teammate.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads and Member for Buderim Brent Mickelberg, who presented Russell with a commemorative plaque, said his long and successful tenure was a testament to the power of teamwork, commitment, and a great sense of humour.

“Russell is one of the longest servicing employees at TMR and his dedication and ability to lead with both strength and kindness are qualities we all strive to emulate,” Minister Mickelberg said.

“On behalf of the Crisafulli Government and the Department of Transport and Main Roads, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and deepest thanks for your incredible service.”
